Westminster College's McGill Library renovation project was recognized with an Award of Merit by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Western Pennsylvania.
ABC contractor members submitted their outstanding projects in the Excellence in Construction competition. Submissions were judged on project scope, narrative, safety, merit shop opportunity, references, entry appearance, and photography. Up to two projects in each subcategory were eligible for Awards of Merit, with the contractor, architect, and owner of each Award of Merit-winning project receiving an engraved pinnacle.
The $6.2 million McGill Library renovation project spanned nearly two years. Highlights of the project included: installation of compact shelving for books and periodicals on the ground floor; relocation of the main entrance and construction of a handicapped-accessible lift; creation of the Williamson and the Drinko Rooms; repair and renovation of the Ferguson Room, including refinishing of vintage 1930s solid oak chairs and library tables; and relocation and renovation of the computer lab.
BRIDGES and Company, Inc., of Pittsburgh was the contractor and Perry Dean Rogers Partners was the architect.
"It was a challenge from start to finish: we were trying to run a college library in a construction zone and Bridges was trying to run a construction zone in a functioning college library," said Molly Spinney, Westminster associate professor and head librarian. "The results were well worth the effort. The campus loves the renovated space and students are using it in increasing numbers."
