Krista Birnbaum, Westminster College assistant professor of art, will share examples of her work at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, April 21, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.
Birnbaum's presentation, "Designing for Nature: Ideas for the Natural World," will share recent works that redesign the instincts of nature. Projects include a weight-loss system for pet mice, sculptures that manipulate plant growth, and a series of images depicting plant life searching for the light.
Birnbaum's work was most recently included in exhibits at Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Arlington Arts Center, Va.; Lexington Art League, Ky.; and the Buffalo Arts Studio, N.Y. Her pieces are currently on exhibit at the ROY G BIV Nonprofit Gallery for Emerging Artists in Columbus, Ohio, and at 516 Arts in Albuquerque, N.M.
Birnbaum, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2008, earned an undergraduate degree from Miami University of Ohio and master's from Syracuse University.
Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
