Mathematics Students and Faculty Participated in Regional Meeting

Westminster College mathematics students and faculty participated in the Mathematical Association of America's Allegheny Mountain Section annual meeting April 9-10 at the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown.

The program included presentations by students and faculty from western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, talks by nationally-known speakers, a problem-solving competition for undergraduates, and events for informal discussion and socializing.

Junior mathematics major Richard Ligo presented "The Search for Extremal Graphs," the results of research conducted with junior mathematics major Stephen Donnel and senior mathematics and computer science major Aaron Zavora.

Dr. Natacha Fontes-Merz and Dr. Pamela Richardson, Westminster assistant professors of mathematics, organized the problem-solving competition for about 50 students, attended the meeting of section officers, and participated in the Section NExT workshop for new faculty.

Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, attended the section officers' meeting and participated in the Section NExT workshop.

Dr. David Offner, Westminster assistant professor of mathematics, participated in the Section NExT workshop.

Dr. Carolyn Cuff, professor and chair of Westminster's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, also attended the meeting.
