Religion Professor Authored Chapter in New Book

Posted on Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Dr. Bryan Rennie, Vira I. Heinz professor and chair of Westminster College's Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics, authored a chapter on Mircea Eliade in the recently published Hermeneutics, Politics and the History of Religions: The Contested Legacies of Joachim Wach and Mircea Eliade.

The book, edited by Christian Wedemeyer and Wendy Doniger, contains papers presented at a conference at the University of Chicago marking the 50th anniversary of Wach's death and the centennial of Eliade's birth and considers the legacies of these two major 20th-century religion historians.

"I am delighted to be able to carry forward the name of Westminster College into a volume that contains not only schools such as the University of Chicago, Columbia, UCLA, and the Sorbonne in Paris as well as universities in Israel, France, and Germany, but also scholars of considerable stature in the field such as Jonathan Z. Smith and Carlo Ginzburg," Rennie said.

Rennie, who has been with Westminster since 1992, earned an undergraduate degree, master's, and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He has authored four books and numerous articles on Mircea Eliade.
