Westminster College Offers Fall Continuing Education Classes

Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents, including 11 new courses ranging from understanding football to Western Pennsylvania murders.

Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals. Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.

Personal enrichment classes include 11 new offerings and three returning favorites this semester:

"Are You Ready for Some Football?" will be held Mondays, Sept. 14, 21, 28, from 7-8 p.m. in room 303 in Old Main. Designed primarily for women (men are welcomed), this class teaches the ABCs of understanding fall's favorite sport.

Emotional Intelligence returns Wednesdays, Sept. 23 and 30, from 7-9 p.m. in room 213 of Old Main. The class explores emotional intelligence and how it applies to the workplace.

Murder in Western Pennsylvania: The Moonda, Amish, and Pizza Bomb Cases is scheduled for Mondays, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 and 12, from 6-7:30 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Science Resources Center. Local author Jim Fisher will discuss the legal, evidentiary, and investigative aspects of three of the most celebrated homicide cases in this area. This class is not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

And Leadership for All will return Tuesdays, Oct. 6 and 13, from 7-9 p.m. in room 213 in Old Main. This course provides an overview of the vast body of leadership principals and applications in today's organizational environment.

Where Did I (We) Come From? will be held Wednesdays, Oct. 7 and 14, from 7-8:30 p.m. in McGill Library. Learn how to search for ancestry information and how to record it.

Beginning Polish Language is scheduled for Wednesdays, Oct. 7, 14, and 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. This introductory class will emphasize vocabulary used in everyday situations. No previous knowledge of Polish is required.

World War II - Stories in History will be held Thursdays, Oct. 8, 15, and 22, from 7-8 p.m. Join history buff and Westminster alumnus Dr. Kip Jones as he presents three stories of intrigue and passion that bring history to life.

From Aspiring Writer to Author: Getting Published is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6-8 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center. Learn about the most popular literary genres, the various forms of modern-day publishing, and things to avoid en route to becoming published.

Tips for Buying Your PC will be held Monday, Oct. 26, from 5-7 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room.

Geek-Speak Translated: Straight Talk on Audio and Video Electronics Before and After You Buy is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 2, from 5-7 p.m. in the Audio Visual Services Department in Thompson Clark Hall.

Leadership for Lasting Change will return Wednesdays, Nov. 4 and 11, from 7-9 p.m. in room 213 of Old Main. This courses explores the impact leadership has on others and how leadership creates lasting change.

Personal fitness classes are scheduled in three sessions: Session A runs from Sept. 14 through Oct. 10; session B runs from Oct. 12 through Nov. 7; and session C runs from Nov. 9 through Dec. 12. Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.

Yoga classes run all three sessions on Wednesdays from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Participants learn how to improve their physical and mental well-being through a series of exercises.

Zumba fuses musical rhythms and movement to create a dynamic workout. Classes will be held Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. during all three sessions.

Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in room 214 of Patterson Hall.

Getting to Know Your Computer, an introductory class, will be Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 15 and 17, from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Introduction to the Internet will be Monday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 23, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Learn to establish an e-mail address, attach files, send forwards, and discuss Internet searching.

Microsoft Word 2007 is scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 22, 24, 29, and Oct. 1, 6, and 8, from 5-7 p.m. This course is designed for experienced Word users who have worked with earlier versions of Microsoft Office Word.

Microsoft Excel I 2007, an introductory class, is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 13 and 15, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Microsoft Excel II 2007 is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 20 and 22, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This class will build on the skills learned in the Excel I session.

Microsoft PowerPoint is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 27 and 29, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This introductory course teaches basic techniques.

Microsoft Publisher 2007 is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Nov. 3 and 5, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Learn to create publications using pre-formatted templates.

Create Your Own Class is an opportunity for groups of six to eight participants to request instruction in a specific area. The group can contact the Continuing Education office, who will attempt to locate an appropriate skilled instructor to meet their interests and schedule a class.
