Music Students Selected to Perform in Small College Intercollegiate Band

Posted on Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Three Westminster College students were selected to perform in the 2009 Small College Intercollegiate Band in Austin, Texas, in March.

"This honors ensemble is held as part of the Collegiate Band Directors National Association Conference. Musicians were chosen from applicants from across the country. Westminster College has the most representatives from any of the participating colleges and universities. While in Austin, the students will have a busy rehearsal schedule with a Saturday concert. They will also attend concerts each evening featuring the finest bands and wind ensembles from across the country. This marks the fourth time during my tenure that Westminster College instrumentalists were represented in this national ensemble," said Dr. R. Tad Greig, Westminster assistant professor of music and director of bands.

Jennie Smith, a senior music and Christian education major, is a daughter of Kendall and Julia Smith of Trophy Club, Texas, and a graduate of Western Hills High School. She plays the oboe.

Erin Thompson, a junior music education major, is a daughter of Thomas and Linda Thompson of Imperial and a graduate of West Allegheny High School. She plays the flute.

Stephen Wheeler, a senior mathematics and music major, is a son of Frank and Terry Wheeler of Crescent Township and a graduate of Moon Area High School. He plays bassoon.

The students received travel/presentation grants from Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Terri Lenox, Westminster College associate professor of computer science and co-director of the Drinko Center, said, "The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to participate in regional and national conferences."

All grant recipients have the opportunity to participate in Westminster's Undergraduate Research Symposium in April.
