Biochemistry Major Receives Grant for Undergraduate Research

Posted on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

LeighAnn Jordan, a Westminster College senior biochemistry major in the honors program, received an undergraduate research grant from Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Her research, "Use of Fryer Waste to Produce Electricity via Grease Trap Anticoagulants and Microbial Fuel Cell," is advised by Dr. Peter Smith, Westminster associate professor of chemistry.

Jordan is a daughter of Suzan and Lance Dennis of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Riverview High School.

"An important component of the work of the Drinko Center is to enhance opportunities for undergraduate research," said Dr. Terri Lenox, Westminster College associate professor of computer science and co-director of the Drinko Center. "The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to conduct research and to present their research at regional and national conferences."

All grant recipients have the opportunity to participate in Westminster's Undergraduate Research Symposium in April.
