Westminster College to Host SRU English Professor at Bleasby Colloquium

Posted on Friday, November 7, 2008

Westminster College's Bleasby Colloquium will host Slippery Rock University English professor Dr. Rachela Permenter Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Permenter's talk, "Shakespeare and the Postmodern Cherokee," will consider the use of recent performances of Shakespeare's character Caliban from The Tempest as a discussion base for exploring the effects of the late-20th-century shift in worldview.

Permenter earned an undergraduate degree and master's from Kent State University and Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses that include Shakespeare, Native American literature, women's literature, literary criticism, and a seminar in pluralism. Her research interests include literary theory, Native American literature, 19th-century American literature, and film studies.

This colloquium is part of the George Bleasby Colloquia, a series of literary events in honor of the late Dr. Bleasby, who chaired the Department of English at Westminster from 1954-75.
