Voice Students Earn Awards in Competition

Sixteen Westminster College voice students participated in the Tri-State National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition Nov. 1 at Westminster. Six of those students placed in their category.

Karen Biddle, a music performance major from Silver Spring, Md., earned first place in Sophomore Women.

Kimberly Hasara, a music performance major from Pittsburgh, earned first place in Senior Women.

Andrew McMurray, a music education major from Cooksburg, earned second place in Freshmen Men.

Anthony Nathal, an elementary education major from Edinboro, earned third place in Freshmen Men.

Alicia Pabrinkis, a music education major from Pittsford, N.Y., earned second place in Lower Division Musical Theater Women.

Stephanie Witzorreck, a music education major from Jamestown (Pa.), earned third place in Senior Women.

The students were accompanied on piano by Westminster adjunct music faculty Marie Libal-Smith and Jeffrey Wachter.

Dr. Anne Hagan Bentz, Westminster associate professor of music, is serving her second year as president of Tri-State NATS and coordinator of the event. She said, "The competition provides the opportunity for students of voice to compete in both classical and musical theater categories. The participants range in age from high school through college to adult."

The students represented the voice studios of Bentz; Dr. Robin Lind, associate professor of music and director of choral activities; and Westminster adjunct music faculty William Ambert, Mr. Kris Harper, and Janet Kane. Lind, Ambert, and Harper were among the judges.
