Two teams of Westminster College students participated in the 2008 ACM East Central North America Programming Contest Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Youngstown State University.

The teams were under the direction of Dr. John Bonomo, Westminster associate professor of computer science.

Team A included:

James Bryan, a senior mathematics major, is a son of Leigh Bryan-Taylor and James Bryan, both of Greensburg. He is a graduate of Greater Latrobe High School.

Mark Gordon, a senior computer science major, is a son of Gregory Gordon of Butler and a graduate of Butler Area High School.

Andrew Slane, a senior computer science major, is a son of Michael Slane of New Wilmington and a graduate of Logan High School.

Team B members were:

Jordan Camara, a senior computer science major, is a son of Armando Camara of Hermitage and a graduate of LaSalle Green Hills High School.

Peter Lukich, a senior computer information systems major, is a son of Donna Lukich of Washington and Harry Lukich of Meadowlands. He is a graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.

Stephen Wheeler, a senior mathematics and music major, is a son of Frank and Terry Wheeler of Crescent Township and a graduate of Moon Area High School.

Contestants were given a set of eight programming problems and five hours to solve as many as possible. Points were awarded based on the number of problems solved correctly, as well as the speed with which solutions were obtained.

Youngstown State was one of four sites where the IBM-sponsored contest was held. Other locations were: McMaster University in West Hamilton, Ontario; University of Cincinnati; and University of Michigan. The contest draws students from colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Ontario, and Indiana.

The contest provides college students with opportunities to interact with students from other universities, and to sharpen and demonstrate their problem-solving, programming, and teamwork skills.
