Make-A-Difference Day Held Oct. 25

Westminster College's Make-A-Difference Day was observed Oct. 25 with over 100 students completing over 335 hours of community service.

Bethany South, assistant coordinator of civic engagement and service learning for Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, coordinated the day's events.

South said, "This year's service hours were an increase of more than 100 hours from the 2007 event, which was Westminster's first Make-A-Difference Day."

This year's student groups included:
- Alpha Phi Omega cleaned up trash around Brittain Lake, the soccer field, the biology trail, and Anderson Amphitheater
- Alpha Sigma Phi cleaned around Brittain Lake
- Audio Visual Services collected books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and games to send to servicemen and women
- Habitat for Humanity hosted a work day with the Mahoning Valley Habitat affiliate
- Kappa Delta partnered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters to make dog treats for the Lawrence County Humane Society
- Lambda Sigma picked up trash around campus and under the bleachers at Burry Stadium
- Dr. Sherri Pataki's Peace Studies class started an after-school program at South West Gardens, a community center in Farrell
- Sierra Student Coalition picked up trash along a one-mile stretch of Interstate 80
- Student Alumni Association drove golf carts to shuttle visitors to Westminster President Dr. Richard Dorman's inauguration
- Student Government Association greeted visitors and ushered for the inauguration
