Wind Ensemble to Present Young Conductors Concert Nov. 7

Posted on Monday, November 3, 2008

The Westminster College Wind Ensemble will present its Young Conductors concert Friday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Dr. R. Tad Greig, Westminster assistant professor of music and director of bands, the concert will feature three student conductors.

"This Young Conductors concert originated seven years ago and has grown into an amazing showcase for our musicians and young conductors," Greig said. "Three students were selected from highly competitive auditions for the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the Wind Ensemble."

This year's student conductors are:

Emily Burke, a senior music education major from Chardon, Ohio, will conduct the ensemble in Emperata Overture.

Joseph Ohodnicki, a junior music education major from East Pittsburgh, will conduct Chorale and Alleluia.

Kevin Shields, a senior music education major from Eldred, will direct Psalm for Band.

Additional selections on the program include Jayce John Ogren's Symphonies of Gala, Frank Ticheli's Postcard, and Mark Camphouse's Yosemite Autumn.

In addition to the fall concert, the Wind Ensemble participated in the recent inauguration of Westminster President Dr. Richard Dorman and was selected from over 150 audition recordings as one of two collegiate wind ensembles to perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's state conference in April.

Greig, who has been with Westminster since 1995, earned an undergraduate degree from Grove City College, master's from Youngstown State University, and Ph. D. from Kent State University.
