Religion Professor to Speak at Faculty Forum

Posted on Monday, November 3, 2008

Dr. Beverly Cushman, Westminster College assistant professor of religion and Christian education, will speak on "National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute: Holy Land and Holy City in Classical Judaism, Christianity, and Islam" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

Cushman was selected from a national pool to attend the National Endowment for the Humanities' five-week summer study opportunity at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies (U.K.).

She will discuss the social construction of the idea of "Holy Land" and "Holy City." She will use the city of Jerusalem as the basis for discussion of the development of the idea of sacred space in the classical texts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
