Spanish Professor to Speak at Faculty Forum

Posted on Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Dr. Joel Postema, Westminster College assistant professor of Spanish and Heritage Chair of Humanities, will present "Güegüense's Shadow: What Can an Old Indian Teach Us about Nicaragua?" at Faires Faculty Forum on Wednesday, April 9, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

"Güegüense is the main character in a Nicaraguan play (also often called Güegüense) that centers on questions of colonial authority and indigenous resistance," Postema said. "Even though its origins are shrouded in mystery, the story is central to the culture of Nicaragua, a country with a long history of oppression."

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.

Postema, who has been with Westminster since 2005, earned an undergraduate degree from Calvin College, a master's from Western Michigan University, and Ph.D. from Washington University.
