Students Experienced Service Learning for Inquiry Class

Posted on Thursday, March 6, 2008

Dr. Sherri Pataki, Westminster College assistant professor of psychology, involved her first-year Inquiry students in service learning projects during the fall semester that resulted in 105 hours of community service.

Working with Lawrence County Community Action Partnership (LCCAP), the 17 students were given the opportunity to participate in several community service projects.

Some worked with Epworth United Methodist Church in New Castle, and the church's food distribution program. Others provided classroom support for the Head Start program at the New Castle Development Center, helping preschoolers with a variety of tasks. A third group helped the Lawrence County Housing Department, raking leaves and painting for local residents.

Inquiry is a component of the First-Year Program at Westminster. The objectives of the course are: articulating and practicing the values and methods of a liberal arts education; engaging, experiencing, and explaining different ways of knowing; and pursuing interdisciplinary study and discussion of important issues.
