Posted on Thursday, February 28, 2008

Westminster College's Office of the Chaplain and Church Relations will host "An Evening with the Rev. Dr. Donald Opitz" Monday, March 10, at 8 p.m. in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Opitz, a 1983 Westminster College graduate, earned a master of divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Ph.D. from Boston University. He is an associate professor of sociology and director of the master's in higher education program at Geneva College.

He co-authored The Outrageous Idea of Academic Faithfulness with Derek Melleby. The authors state most Christian college student separate their academic life from church attendance, Bible study, and prayer. Too often, discipleship of the mind is overlooked, if not ignored altogether.

Opitz will share the importance of academic discipleship and taking studies seriously, as well as integrating faith and learning.
