Students Win Awards at Model United Nations Conference

Posted on Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Eight Westminster College students and their adviser attended the 48th annual Midwest Model United Nations conference Feb. 13-16 in St. Louis.

The students received travel grants from Westminster's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and additional funding from the Department of Political Science and Sociology.

The students are members of Westminster's recently established Model United Nations Club and this was their first competition.

The group represented Romania and was led by club president Jelena Gerga, a senior international politics and political science major, and head delegate Meredith Smith, a freshman international politics and French major.

Natasha Kassim, a junior biochemistry and political science major, and Danielle McCullough, a senior history major, won honorable mention awards for their work on the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) committee and ECOSOC Plenary sessions.

Dr. Michael Aleprete, Westminster College assistant professor of political science and faculty adviser, accompanied the group.

"They far exceeded what could reasonably be expected from first-time delegates," Aleprete said. "They went to St. Louis well prepared, and were very active throughout the conference. Their performance is a testament to what a good group they are."
