Professor of Music Attends International Conference

Posted on Monday, August 20, 2007

Shawn Reynolds, Westminster College adjunct music professor, recently presented a lecture, "Scraping the Surface of Reed Knife Sharpening," at the International Double Reed Society at Ithaca College.

"The lecture addressed various reed knife sharpening techniques and how they were applied to various reed knife styles. Many are not aware that the double reed musicians (oboes, bassoons, English horns, and contra-bassoons) must craft their own reeds using very sophisticated equipment through a process the can take as many as eight hours for each reed," Reynolds explained.

The International Double Reed Society is a professional society with members all over the world. Attendees at this year's conference included people from Japan, Australia, and Russia.

Reynolds, an adjunct professor of music specializing in the oboe, received his undergraduate degree from Youngstown State University and his M.M. from University of Cincinnati.
