Westminster College Graduate Travels to Europe with Youth Pops Orchestra

Posted on Thursday, August 9, 2007

Megan McConnell, a 2006 Westminster College graduate and Pittsburgh Youth Pops Orchestra manager, spent 10 days in Austria and Germany with its members.

The orchestra presented concerts in Strobl, Garmisch, Jenbach, and Westendorf. Between performances, the students had an opportunity to experience European culture and cuisine. They saw landmarks made famous in The Sound of Music; toured Schloss Tratzberg and the Vienna Opera House; enjoyed the rides at Prater Amusement Park; experienced Tyrolean folklore through a special song and dance presentation; blew glass in Rattenburg; visited Mauthausen concentration camp; and played in the snow at the top of a glacier in the Alps.

McConnell is orchestra manager for the 75-piece student orchestra under the direction of Roger Tabler. She is also the owner of MMMusic, a piano studio in North Fayette. McConnell is a certified Kindermusik instructor and a member of the Pittsburgh Piano Teachers Association.
