Posted on Monday, June 4, 2007

Every Westminster College molecular biology major from the Class of 2007 will be attending graduate or medical schools in the fall. In recent years, Westminster College graduates have been accepted into medical schools at double the national average.

Katie Meadows, a molecular biology major and chemistry minor, will attend the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She graduated magna cum laude with College Honors in molecular biology. Her honors thesis, "A Lethal Injection? Assessing the Effects of Increased Docosahexaenoic Acid Plasma Membrane Composition on Thimerosal Toxicity," was advised by Dr. John Robertson, associate professor of biology. Meadows is a daughter of Wendy Meadows of Murrysville and a graduate of Penn Hills High School.

Jonathan Schilke, a molecular biology major and chemistry minor, will be enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh's molecular, cell, and developmental biology graduate program. A magna cum laude graduate with College Honors in molecular biology, his honors thesis, "The Hypermethylation of TMEM97 May Provide a Link Between the Gene and the Etiology of Ovarian Surface Epithelial Carcinoma," was advised by Dr. Joshua Corrette-Bennett, assistant professor of biology. Schilke is a son of Cheryl Schilke and Richard Schilke, both of North Huntingdon, and a graduate of Norwin High School.

Nicole Sacca, a molecular biology major, will attend the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). Her capstone project, "Determining PSR Chromosome Transmission in Successive Generations of Nasonia Vitripennis," was advised by Corrette-Bennett. She is a daughter of Joseph and Linda Sue Sacca of Latrobe and a graduate of Greater Latrobe High School.
