Philosophy Professor's Article Published

Posted on Friday, December 15, 2006

Dr. David Goldberg, Westminster College assistant professor of philosophy, recently published his article "A Nietzschean Solution to Ethical Relativism" in the book Existentialist Thinkers and Ethics.

"My article concerns an inherent critique of Existentialism, especially those kinds branded as atheistic Existentialism: Sartre and Nietzsche in particular," Goldberg said. "With the postmodern death of metaphysics, a position that grounds these forms of Existentialism, ethical decision making appears to become impossible as all positions seem to be equally justified. My paper attempts to offer a Nietzschean solution to this problem by examining his concept of genealogy and the significance it plays in ethical decision making."

Goldberg first presented his findings in November of 2002 at a conference on Existential Thinkers and Ethics held at Concordia University in Montreal and organized by Christine Daigle.

"At the conclusion of what turned out to be a great conference, Christine asked a number of us if we would be interested in publishing our papers as a collection of articles. After some months of discourse, McGill-Queen's University Press agreed to the project."

Goldberg, who has been with Westminster College since 2002, received his undergraduate degree and master's from Pennsylvania State University, and his Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
