The annual Westminster College Christmas Vesper service will take place Sunday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The event is open to the public.
The program features prayers, songs, scripture read by Westminster students, the Praise Team, instrumental ensembles, the Handbell Choir, Liturgical Dancers, and various performances from the book by Mildred Schell, The Shoemaker's Dream. Performers include: Beth Brooks, secretary in the Student Affairs Office; Michael Slane, theatre instructor; and several students will portray characters of Schell's book.
The Christmas message will be delivered by the Rev. James Mohr II, College chaplain; the opening prayer will be said by Terrance Phelps, a junior business administration major from Youngstown, Ohio; the Handbell Choir is directed by Anne P. Bruening; Dr. R. Tad Greig is the director of bands; Kris Harper is the director of the Women's Chorus; Kathryn Davison Miller is the organist; James Henderson is the director of the Gospel Choir; Dr. Robin Lind is the director of choral activities; and the Liturgical Dancers are under the direction of Gina Sharbaugh, artistic director of dance theater.
The welcoming music will be performed by the flute, brass, and woodwind ensembles. Some music will feature the men and women's choirs and the audience.
The Christmas gifts that are going to be displayed in Orr Lobby were purchased by members of the College community through Project Angel Tree. This organization provides Christmas gifts to children whose parents are in prison. Coordinating this effort are the members of the Chapel Staff Service Team. The campus luminaries providing a lighted path to the event are provided by the Residence Life staff.
The evening's offerings will go to support different outreach programs supported by the Chapel Office. Ministries include campus work trips, Habitat for Humanity international home building projects, and various volunteer opportunities.
The Chapel staff is sponsoring a cookie and punch reception in Orr Lobby and the Art Gallery following the service.
