Sudanese Moderator of Evangelical Presbyterian Church to Speak at Westminster College Nov. 27

Posted on Monday, November 20, 2006

The Rev. John Tong Puk, moderator of the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church (SPEC), will speak at a chapel service Monday, Nov. 27, at 11:40 a.m. in Westminster College's Wallace Memorial Chapel.

"He will be speaking about the situation in his country, and asking questions about our church in the United States," said the Rev. David Dawson, executive presbyter of the Shenango Presbytery. "The role of a moderator is the same in Sudan as it is in the United States: to conduct the meeting of the denomination at its annual meeting and to represent the church before the public. The word evangelical' means Protestant as opposed to Catholic everywhere in the world except in the United States, but the church structure is the same."

Accompanying Puk is the Rev. Madut Tong Ngor, who is dean of students and teacher at Gereif Bible School, and Ngor's wife, Nada Goutkouth Kongwar, who is chairwoman of the SPEC Women Committee.

Puk, Kongwar and Ngor will also appear at the Westminster College Peacemaking Coffeehouse at 4:15 p.m. in the Berlin Lounge of the McKelvey Campus Center.

Both events are free and open to the public. Contact the Rev. James Mohr, Westminster College chaplain and coordinator of this event, at (724) 946-7116 or e-mail mohrjr@westminster.edu for more information.
