During his summer internship at the University of Pittsburgh, Carlson worked with Dr. Neal DeLuca and a group of professionals to research the Herpes Simplex Virus.
"We infected human cells and isolated RNA to compare with cells that were not infected using the Micro Array," said Carlson. "I was extremely lucky to get to use such state-of-the-art equipment. I was surprised that we got so much done in three months, but it was only possible because this new technology can repeat the experiment ten times faster than the old method.
"I went into this internship not knowing what I was going to do, except that I would be working on the Herpes Simplex Virus," continued Carlson. "I'm glad I went. I learned more than I thought possible. Graduate schools are looking for students who have research experience, and this is important to me. I want to go into the medical research field."
Carlson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Carlson, 51 Belford St., Shavertown, and a graduate of Dallas High School.
