Six Westminster Students Attend National Service Convention

Posted on Monday, February 3, 2003

Six Westminster College students recently attended the Alpha Phi Omega National Convention in New Orleans.

Joseph Gill, Sara Heiman, Laura Krutschnitt, Lauren Perkins, Cassandra Walker, and Phillip Webster attended the Brotherhood of the Bayou convention, which was the largest in the service fraternity's history, drawing over 2,300 members from across the United States and the Philippines.

While at the convention, Krutschnitt and Walker served over 25 hours on committees and represented the group as voting members on the delegation floor for 20 hours. The rest of the group attended workshops such as Membership and Retention, Chutes and Ladders of Service, Fencing America's Promise, Low Risk Fellowship, and Launch, which was a leadership workshop.

Krutschnitt and Heiman also included a service project during their time in New Orleans. They helped with the general clean up of an old cemetery and laid timbers in preparation for landscaping.

"From the beginning of the convention to the end, it was an amazing experience," said Heiman. "All six of us brought back so much valuable information to share with our group and the campus community."

Westminster's local chapter of Alpha Phi Omega will host a sectional conference Feb. 28-March 1. "Retro Sectional Extravaganza" invites other members from Allegheny College, Penn State-Behrend, Carnegie Mellon University, Carlow College, Edinboro University, and Concord College in West Virginia, where they will elect a new sectional chair, attend workshops and a president's round table, and culminates in a Retro Dance that includes all Westminster students.
