Tina Williams Brewer, who has a national reputation as a creator of story quilts, will display her work at the Westminster College Art Gallery through Sept. 22. The gallery is open to the public Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-9p.m. and Sunday, noon-9p.m.
Brewer's work focuses on an exploration of African-American history and the personal experiences that tie her to it. Her quilts tell stories of her people such as the migration of blacks on slave ships from Africa. She also relates personal stories like her grandmother's contention that blacks should not wear the color red.
"My work has been a progression of learning about our history and why we are survivors," said Brewer.
Brewer's work has been displayed in local Pittsburgh shows as well as the American Craft Museum in New York, the Museum of Texan Culture in San Antonio, in the 1998 National Black Artists Festival in Atlanta, and the 13th Annual Southwest Black Art Exhibition in Dallas, where her quilt, See the Music, was added to the permanent collection of the Museum of African-American Life and Culture.
A slide lecture on African-American quilts is scheduled for Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. in Patterson Hall 311.
