The Westminster College Marching Band has grown to a record size of 120 members.
Under the direction of R. Tad Greig, director of bands at Westminster College, the band began camp on Aug. 15 to learn 29 pages of marching band drill movement and over 700 measures of music to perform at pre-game and half-time performances of Titan football. The camp was culminated with a performance at Kennywood Park to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.
Leading the band in their new uniforms are field commanders Douglas Black, senior music education major from Rochester, and Brian Pollitt, junior music education major from Bellmore, N.Y.
"The band looks and sounds great this year, and I know they are looking forward to performing for the Titan fans and alumni," said Greig. "The music will be diverse and entertaining with everything from movie soundtracks, to Latin jazz, to the Beatles."
When asked about the growth of the program, Greig commented that he was not only pleased with the amount of players, but he was impressed with the musical and marching quality.
"Unfortunately too many people equate the amount of people with its quality," said Greig. "Many schools our size do not even have marching bands. We've been blessed with talented students who not only participate in marching band, but in our other musical ensembles as well."
Along with the home football games, the band will perform at the Carlynton 25th Annual Festival of Bands, Sept. 22, , the Lawrence County Band Festival Sept. 26, and in the homecoming parade Oct. 13.
