The Westminster College Jazz Ensemble will give its first performance of the year Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

The Jazz Ensemble, which consists of a select group of musicians, performs a wide variety of Jazz music styles at three major concerts a year. They also provide assistance for the Westminster College Admissions Department at several recruitment functions and perform as a guest ensemble at various high school festivals in the area.

This concert will feature Harold Danko, a pianist/composer who is know for his long-term associations with jazz legends including Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Woody Herman and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. For most of the last decade, he has performed and recorded with his quartet, featuring tenor saxophonist Rich Perry, and has released seven highly acclaimed CDs on the Steeple Chase label.

Following more than a quarter century on the New York City jazz scene as both a performer and educator, Danko accepted an appointment from Eastman in 1998 as an associate professor of jazz and contemporary media.

While at Westminster, Danko will also conducting a jazz improvisation master class in Orr Auditorium, Friday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.

Both events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Westminster College Department of Music at (724) 946-7270.
