Four Westminster students initiated into Alpha Kappa Delta sociology society

Four Westminster students were recently initiated into Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honorary society.

Held April 6 in the Witherspoon Lakeview Room of McKelvey Campus Center, the ceremony was conducted by Dr. Kristen Park, professor of sociology and Alpha Kappa Delta chapter adviser, and Dr. Jamie Chapman, assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice studies.

Initiates included Caroline Eader, a senior international studies/peace and justice studies major from Bellefontaine, Ohio; juniors Abby McCardle, a criminal justice studies major from Pittsburgh, Lindsey Oliver, a criminal justice studies major from Glenshaw, Pa. and Vanessa Tom, criminal justice studies major from White Oak, Pa.

Eligible qualities for induction into Alpha Kappa Delta include:

  • Be enrolled as a major or minor in a sociology program  or a program sociological in nature;
  • Be at least a junior (third year) by standards of the host institution;
  • Rank in the top 35% of their graduating class in general scholarship;
  • Have maintained the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses taken at the host institution prior to initiation, and
  • Have completed at least four courses (or the equivalent of 12 semester hours) in sociology prior to initiation

Alpha Kappa Delta was founded in 1920 and is dedicated to encouraging and stimulating scholarship while promoting the scientific study and advancement of sociology.
