Westminster History Professor Earns Research Grant

Dr. Timothy Cuff, assistant professor of history at Westminster College, recently received a research grant from the Economic History Association.

This $1,500 Arthur H. Cole grant is awarded annually to scholars at an early point in their careers after a competitive application process.

"This year I was one of four recipients," Cuff said.  "The money I received is being used to pay keypunchers to digitize 8,000 Pennsylvania National Guard enlistment records that I previously gathered at the Pennsylvania Archives while serving as a Scholar in Residence.  I hope to analyze this data over the next year.  This work will expand the chronological coverage of my research on human stature change in Pennsylvania into the last decades of the nineteenth century and serve as one of the few large scale anthropometric samples for the United States for this time period."

Cuff, who has been with Westminster College since 2000, earned his undergraduate degree from Westminster College, his masters' from Bowling Green State University and the University of Pittsburgh, and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

The brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi at Westminster College raised over $22,000 for the American Cancer Society inits eighth annual "Relay for Life."

The top two teams were repeats from last year: 1) Winck Trucking and 2) New Wilmington Kiwanis.

"Westminster student and three-year survivor of leukemia  Sara Belsito [a sophomore broadcast communications major from East Pittsburgh] cut the ribbon to start the opening lap," said Quay Rosengarth, a sophomore public relations major from New Wilmington and Alpha Sigma Phi philanthropy chair.  "Each Relay event and every cent raised we become closer to reaching the ultimate goal, which is to find a cure for cancer."

This year's sponsors included Giant Eagle, UPMC, The Apple Castle, The Tavern, Pizza Joes, Alices Pizza, The Wright Place Salone, McDonalds, Borland's Golf Course, the New Wilmington Volunteer Fire Department, Titan Radio, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Westminster College.

The concept behind Relay for Life involves teams of 8-15 people taking turns walking or running around the track, relay-style, for 12 straight hours.  Each team member is asked to raise donations to support the American Cancer Society's services, programs, and research.
