Theatre Professor to Discuss His Time in Iraq

Posted on Monday, September 4, 2006

Dr. Scott Mackenzie, Westminster College assistant professor of theatre, will open the Westminster College Faculty Forum with "Creating Theatre in a Theatre of War, or How I Spent My Summer (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) Vacation Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

"I will talk a little about how I found myself in Iraq," Mackenzie said. "What I did there for the Army and why I decided to produce a play, including the surprising national recognition that I received. I will also talk about what I learned as theatre artist and education through the process."

While spending about a year stationed in Iraq serving the Army, Mackenzie made history by producing and directing one of the first English-speaking plays since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Opening night for "Bigfoot Stole My Wife" took place Feb. 17, 2006 in one of Hussein's former palaces that now serves as the United States Embassy in Baghdad.

McKenzie, who has been with Westminster since 2001, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Dallas and his master's and Ph.D. from Wayne State University.

Faculty Forum, established in 1990, serves as a venue for the exchange of ideas and information among Westminster College faculty. Speakers present their research, teaching ideas, lectures, performances, special programs, and uses of technology to keep faculty informed about the work of colleagues from many disciplines.

The event is free and open to the public. Contact Mackenzie at (724) 946-6238 or e-mail mailto:mackensa@westminster.edu for more information.
