Westminster College students Jennie Bechtel, Chad Carlson, Elizabeth Dressing, and Amy Rentz were recently inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, an international honor society in sociology.

"The ceremony was attended by sociology faculty, current Alpha Kappa Delta members, parents of the new initiates, and Westminster staff who are lifetime members," said Dr. Kristin Park, associate professor of sociology and adviser to the group.  "It was followed by a banquet and a lecture by Dr. Rita Akin [assistant professor of economics] who discussed the theme of cultural diversity as illuminated by her personal experiences growing up in Hungary, Turkey, and Malaysia, and now living in the United States."

Alpha Kappa Delta requires its members to be sociology majors, have junior or senior status, and have a grade point average of at least a 3.25 and be part of the top 35 percent of their class.  "The group exists to promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, research of social problems, and other social and intellectual activities that will lead to the improvement of the human condition," Park said.
