From April 6th to April 9th, five Westminster honors students had the opportunity to present research at the Northeast Regional Honors Conference. The conference brings together hundreds of honors students from around the region to share research and ideas. Appropriately, the theme for the conference was “Bridging the Divide,” inviting students to investigate ways in which metaphorical bridges can be constructed between various topics, cultures, and disciplines.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation has announced 240 new Goldwater Scholars and identified 307 students as Honorable Mentions. For 30 years, Goldwater Scholarships have been awarded to thousands of undergraduates pursuing careers in STEM research. Westminster College honors students Tyler Heintz ’18 and Audrey Nickle ’18 were granted Honorable Mention status in the 2017 Goldwater Scholarship competition.

Westminster College honors students spent a weekend at a Monastery in Mohawk, New York this past November learning more about monastic life. The trip was part of an honors course that Dr. Russell Martin, Professor of History, is teaching this semester on Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced today that Westminster College and Dr. Bethany Hicok, professor of English and director of the honors program, received a $105,400 grant to lead a three-week summer seminar for college and university professors on “Elizabeth Bishop and the Literary Archive.”

Dr. Bethany Hicok, Westminster College professor of English, traveled 6,000 miles to and throughout Brazil to write her latest book, Elizabeth Bishop’s Brazil, which was published last week by the University of Virginia Press.
