Westminster hosts alumni and friends summer concert in New Wilmington Borough Park

A special summertime concert in the New Wilmington Borough Park will feature Westminster College musicians and a special performance by members of Pittsburgh Steeline, the official drumline of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Sweet Sounds of Summer: An Alumni & Friends Concert,” sponsored by Westminster’s Office of Alumni Engagement and School of Music, will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at the New Wilmington Borough Park’s new outdoor amphitheater.

Musicians affiliated with Westminster—including alumni, students, current and past employees, and friends of the College—will perform throughout the evening. The concert will feature a wide range of performances, from classic vocals to ukuleles.

The evening’s entertainment will include:

•    Jazz numbers from a Westminster brass sextet featuring Westminster music faculty Dr. R. Tad Greig of Mercer and Dr. Timothy Winfield of Hermitage; senior music education majors Greer Wardlaw from Shippenville, Pa., and Jonah Hubauer of Clarion, Pa.; and alumni Dr. Andrew Erb ’96 of West Middlesex, Pa., and Devin Greig ’15 of Baden, Pa.

•    Classical vocals from Westminster music faculty member Dr. Andrew Withington; alumni Meghan Kowalski ’20 of Mercer, Pa., and  Joseph Spurio ’17 of Hubbard, Ohio; and friend Joanne McFarland of New Wilmington

•    Alumni vocalist Karen Campman Emmett ’75 of West Middlesex will perform patriotic music and an ode to veterans

•    Alumni vocalist and guitarist Mike Leslie ’82 will perform contemporary numbers

•    Alumni percussionist and Pittsburgh Steeline member Steven Flory ’12 of North Versailles, Pa., and other members of the acclaimed drumline will perform

•    Local ukulele group Ukuladies Gone Wild featuring alumna and retired Westminster employee Babs Quincy ’85 of Hermitage; faculty emerita Dorita Bolger of West Middlesex; and Paulette Darko, Mary Jo Sanitate and Rhonda Paglia.

•    Westminster music faculty member and pianist Jeffrey Wachter of Hermitage will accompany musicians.

Concert-goers will be treated to a free Rita’s Italian Ice during the show. Additionally, barbecue chicken dinners can be ordered from the New Wilmington Rotary Club and picked up and enjoyed during the concert. To place chicken orders, contact Gus Vavithes at 724-946-2434 or Rob Klamut at 724-651-4956 no later than Aug. 20. Dinner pick-up runs from 4 - 7 p.m. at the park’s picnic shelter.

The event will be held light rain or shine. It is free and open to the public, although Westminster alumni are encouraged to register for the event at www.westminster.edu/events.
