Senior journalist earns BEA Award of Excellence for podcast program

Documentary explores aromanticism
Sydney Roach, a Westminster College multimedia journalism major, earned a Broadcast Education Association (BEA) 2021 Award of Excellence for her senior capstone project that explores what it means to be aromantic.
Roach’s capstone documentary “Aromanticism: Who Needs Romance Anyways?” received the award for the audio competition’s educational program at BEA Festival of Media Arts. Roach’s in-depth podcast examines aromanticism and those individuals who feel little to no romantic attraction towards other people, regardless of gender, and are not driven to the romantic experience.
Roach a senior from Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania, works at Titan Radio, where she is a disc jockey, engineers broadcasts, writes scripts and produces promos. She also serves as the editor-in-chief for The Holcad student newspaper. She is currently an intern with Pittsburgh’s NPR news station WESA-FM.

The BEA Festival of Media Arts competition recognizes the best in faculty and student-produced media. This year’s competition featured more than 1,300 entries representing more than 250 colleges and universities in the following competitions: audio, documentary, film and video, interactive multimedia, news, scriptwriting, sports and two-year colleges.
