College Groups to Host Events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Westminster College will host events throughout April to raise awareness of sexual assault.  All events are free and open to the public.

The Clothesline Project will take place during lunch in the TUB Tuesday, April 10.  The program, started on Cape Cod in 1990, provides an opportunity for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt that is hung on a clothesline to be seen by others.  Residence halls on campus will be contributing shirts that represent their stance against sexual assault and violence.

A panel of guest speakers will discuss the issue of consent April 10 at 7 p.m. in McKelvey Campus Center's Berlin Student Lounge.  A survivor of sexual assault, a Lawrence County assistant district attorney, and the executive director of the Lawrence County Crisis Shelter will share what it means to give and receive consent and the repercussions of sex without consent.

The Lawrence County Crisis Shelter will provide information on childhood sexual abuse and assault during lunch in the TUB Tuesday and Thursday, April 17 and 19.

"Stomp & Shout: We've Had Enough!" a presentation on sexual assault prevention and awareness, will be Wednesday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Berlin Student Lounge.  The program will be followed by a walk around campus and New Wilmington.

Sponsors of the month's activities are the Lawrence County Crisis Shelter and Westminster's Residence Life Services, Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies, Allies, Office of Diversity Services, and Counseling Center.
