The Westminster College Center for the Environment will offer six virtual college prep workshops this summer, giving high schoolers an opportunity to learn about the environment and build their college readiness skills.

Open to students in grades nine through 12, the Tuesday workshops will be held via Zoom and will be structured like online college classes and will involve active learning.

Environmental science faculty members Dr. Helen Boylan, director of the Center for the Environment, and Dr. Patrick Krantz, director of the Outdoor Laboratory, will co-teach the workshops.

“Each month we will feature a different environmental theme, such as water, ecosystems and energy. We will use these themes as an opportunity to develop essential college success skills such as data interpretation, writing and analysis,” said Krantz. “But this will not be your typical online session. Students should be prepared to laugh and have fun while learning.”

Students may participate in all sessions or individual sessions. Sessions for the summer workshops are:

Water Theme & Reading Strategies: Tuesday, June 8
Water Theme & Basic Data Interpretation: Tuesday, June 22
Ecosystem Theme & Oral Communication Strategies: Tuesday, July 6
Ecosystem Theme & Writing Strategies: Tuesday, July 20
Energy Theme & Basic Data Analysis: Tuesday, Aug. 10
Energy Theme & Evaluating Resources: Tuesday, Aug. 24

Early registration is recommended for the limited slots available. Cost is $10 per session and scholarships are available to students with financial hardships. Registrations can be made here.

Participants will be entered into a raffle for a grand prize at the end of the summer. Those who participate in all six sessions double their chances of winning.

College prep workshops are some of the many outdoor educational programs being offered by the Center for the Environment this year. See www.westminster.edu/environment for a complete listing of summer events.
