Majors and Minors in Music at Westminster College

Students who wish to pursue a singular major in music at Westminster College may do so under either of two degrees: the BACHELOR OF MUSIC or the BACHELOR OF ARTS.

The Bachelor of Music degree is offered with majors in: (1) Music Education, (2) Music Performance,and (3) Sacred Music. The Music Education major fulfills certification requirements for those preparing to teach music in the public schools (K-12). The Music Performance major is designed for students planning to continue specialized study in preparation for careers as professional performers. The Sacred Music major develops the interests of those who wish to be ministers of music or church organists or conductors. The student pursuing a major in Music Education, Music Performance, or Sacred Music must complete 96 semester hours’ credit in music plus the all-college requirements for graduation. (The all-college requirements include 44 semester hours' credit outside of music.)

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in Music has been constructed primarily for students who have a strong interest in music and who also desire a broad liberal arts education. The student pursuing this major must complete 48 semester hours’ credit in music plus the all-college requirements for graduation.

Students who wish to pursue a double major which includes music as one of the majors may do so under either the BACHELOR OF ARTS or the BACHELOR OF SCIENCE degrees.

This program is designed for students who have equally strong interests in music and in a discipline other than music. The student pursuing the double major which includes music as one of the majors, under either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, must complete 36 semester hours’ credit in the music part of the double major, plus the required number of courses in the second major, plus the all-college requirements for graduation.

Students who wish to pursue a minor in music may do so under either the BACHELOR OF ARTS or the BACHELOR OF SCIENCE degrees.

A minor in music is provided for students who are majoring in a discipline other than music under the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. Students choosing a minor in music must complete 24 semester hours’ credit in music.
