Westminster College Offers 75 Jerb Miller Scholarships; Education Alumni Nominate Deserving Students for $36,000 Awards

Westminster College alumni who are educators have the opportunity to nominate a deserving student for 75 newly-created Jerb Miller Scholarships.

The 75 Jerb Miller Scholarships are four-year $36,000 renewable awards ($9,000 per year). The scholarships are created in honor of Dr. Jerb Miller, a beloved professor of education at Westminster from 1968 until his death in 1992.

"Jerb Miller's life blessed and influenced many Westminster graduates," according to Dr. Darwin Huey, chair of Westminster's Education Department. "This scholarship honors his memory and reminds us, as Jerb did, that Westminster has benefited so many for so long and so deeply."

Westminster alumni who are in the education field have been asked to identify a highly qualified high school student who possesses the personal characteristics that would honor Westminster. Students with a 3.5 or higher grade point average in core subjects may select from any of Westminster's 40 majors. Westminster will grant the scholarships upon endorsements of Westminster alumni educators and formal validation of the students' credentials.

The Jerb Miller Scholarship registration form and student application, mailed to education alumni in November, must be returned to the Admissons Office by Jan. 15, 2004.

"The preparation of teachers has been an integral part of Westminster College since her beginnings over 150 years ago," Huey said. "Throughout those 150 years, teachers have played a significant role in influencing the lives of young people and encouraging them to consider the merits of Westminster College."

Westminster College is enjoying a record amount of interest from prospective students. Westminster has set records for applications for four straight years, and limits its incoming classes to approximately 350 students from an inquiry pool of nearly 20,000.
