The Westminster College Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will host "Reading and Writing in Science Classes Clinic" Monday, April 25, from 4-6 p.m. in the Lakeview Room of the McKelvey Campus Center.

The workshop features Dr. Charles Gorman and other recognized science professionals who will focus on approaches to teaching reading and writing in science classrooms.  This program is an extension of the Literacy Coaches Clinics Tri-State have been convening throughout the school year.  This focus on the application of reading and writing strategies in science is in response to the present plans of the Department of Education to test students in grades four, seven and ten in science, beginning with a "field test" in 2005-06 and following with an assessment of all students in science in those grades in 2006-07.

The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was developed to advance world-class teaching at Westminster and enrich K-12 education through outreach programs for area educators.

The event is sponsored by the Tri-State Area School Study Council Department of Administrative Policy Studies at the School of Education of the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Westminster College.

All clinics offer Act 48 hours and are open to all interested parties.  For registration, contact Carol Fiumara at the Tri-State Area School Study Council at (412) 648-7175 or e-mail fuimara@pitt.edu.  Applications can also be mailed to: 4302 Posvar Hall, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh PA  15260, or faxed to (412) 648-7185.
