Religion Professor Lectured at Harvard

Dr. Bryan Rennie, Westminster College Vira I. Heinz professor in religion, gave an invited lecture on Mircea Eliade April 8 at Harvard University's Center for Government and International Studies.

Eliade, Romanian historian of comparative religion, wrote on a host of subjects and edited the Encyclopedia of Religion during his tenure at the University of Chicago.  His scholarly reputation in recent years has been threatened by discussion of his alleged pro-fascist political activity before and during World War II.

Rennie's lecture, "Mircea Eliade, Facts and Interpretations," addressed the philological, phenomenological, and political facets of Eliade's work and life.

Rennie, who chairs Westminster's Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics, has been with Westminster since 1992.  He earned an undergraduate degree, master's, and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.  He has authored four books and numerous articles on Mircea Eliade.
