Sierra Student Coalition to Sponsor Earth Day 5K Race April 30

Posted on Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Westminster College's Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) will sponsor its fourth annual Earth Day 5K run and walk Saturday, April 30, starting at 9 a.m. at the Field House.

This year's race is the Meg Rankin Memorial Earth Day 5K in memory of a Westminster alumna and teacher who was very active in environmental education.

The race was created to bring together Westminster students and members of the community to enjoy the campus and to benefit the environment.  It is open to anyone who wants to participate.

New this year is a 200-meter children's race for participants aged 12 and under.  The children's race is scheduled for 9 a.m., prior to the main race.  All children who participate will receive an Earth Day ribbon and the opportunity to engage in crafts and games during the adult race.

Advance registration is $5 for Westminster students ($7 day of the race) and $7 for everyone else ($10 day of the race).  Registration for the children's race is $3 regardless of the registration date.

Each participant will receive an Earth Day keychain and bookmark, as well as pizza and beverages following the race.

Awards in all age categories and for overall winners will be distributed immediately following completion of the main race by all participants.

All proceeds will be designated to fund an environmental education camp for urban youth at Westminster's Field Station.

Registration forms are available online at http://www.westminster.edu/student/orgs/sierra or may be picked up at the Information Desk of the McKelvey Campus Center.
