English Professor to Speak at Bleasby Colloquium Sept. 23

Posted on Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Dr. Bethany Hicok, Westminster College associate professor of English, will present "Brazilian Interludes" at the Bleasby Colloquium Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center. The program is free and open to the public.

Hicok will share her experiences as a participant in the National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar on Contemporary Urban Brazilian Fiction in São Paulo, Brazil, in July. During the seminar, Hicok took Portuguese language classes and researched the American poet Elizabeth Bishop, who lived in Brazil from 1951-1966.

"'Brazilian Interludes' focuses on what Bishop might have called the art of traveling," Hicok said. "Bishop was a consummate traveler and her long interlude in Brazil profoundly influenced her life and work. This presentation discusses Bishop's life in Brazil and her Brazilian poetry of travel."

Hicok, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2001, earned an undergraduate degree from Russell Sage College and two masters and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. She is the author of Degrees of Freedom: American Women Poets and the Women's College, 1905-1955. She has published articles on Bishop, Marianne Moore, and Wallace Stevens, contributed chapters to two books, and delivered papers on American poetry at professional conferences.

This colloquium is part of the George Bleasby Colloquia, a series of literary events in honor of the late Dr. Bleasby, who chaired the Department of English at Westminster from 1954-75. These programs are public presentations by the faculty of the department, featured speakers, and majors on individual scholarship, interests, and creative projects.
