College to Observe Diversity Week

Westminster College's Office of Diversity Services and International Cultures Club have scheduled activities in observance of Diversity Week Nov. 13-19.

Jeannette Hubbard, director of Westminster's Office of Diversity Services, will facilitate a "Hip Hop: Rhyme or Reason" workshop Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in room 255 of the McKelvey Campus Center. Westminster students Evangelina Figueroa and Candace Okello will discuss the relevance of hip hop in today's society. The workshop is sponsored by Westminster's Black Student Union.

Figueroa, a junior public relations major, is a daughter of Osvaldo and Kimberly Figueroa of Youngstown, Ohio, and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

Okello, a junior communication studies major, is a daughter of Serafhin and Janice Okello of Youngstown, Ohio, and a graduate of Chaney High School

Asian Culture Night will be Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in room 315 of Thompson Clark Hall. Dr. SoYoung Kang, Westminster assistant professor of education, will demonstrate sushi making and discuss Korean food and clothing. She will display hanbok, traditional Korean clothing that was once everyday wear and is now reserved for holidays and special occasions.

Dr. Kang-Yup Na, Westminster associate professor of religion, will give a PowerPoint presentation on Korea and how it has changed. Na's son, Christian Na, will demonstrate Tae Kwon Do. Westminster students Thomas Cho and Lira Seo will discuss Korean culture and its differences from and similarities to that found in the United States.

Cho, a freshman biochemistry major, is a son of Byungok and Juran Cho of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Fox Chapel Area High School.

Seo is an international exchange student from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.

Hubbard will facilitate "Finding Common Ground," a roundtable discussion on strategies to diversify student organizations through relationship building, Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in room 255 of the McKelvey Campus Center.
