Capstone Class Visits Local Accounting Firm

Posted on Thursday, March 5, 2009

Westminster College students in the accounting capstone class of Jesse Ligo, Westminster associate professor of accounting and 1982 Westminster graduate, visited the New Castle office of Carbis Walker Feb. 26.

The capstone is a course within the major designed to provide an opportunity for students to evaluate and assess the strengths and limitations of their major field.

"Because so many stereotypes still exist in regard to accountants, I wanted the students to experience first-hand the atmosphere of a modern public accounting firm," Ligo said. "I appreciate members of the firm making time in their schedules during this crucial tax season to offer insight into their organization."

James Hunt, managing partner at Carbis Walker, spoke on the firm's mission statement, core values, culture statement, and changes in public accounting. He stressed the significance of building relationships with both clients and co-workers and having passion for the work.

The Pittsburgh Business Times recognized Carbis Walker as "Best Place to Work in Western Pennsylvania" for medium-sized companies (51-150 employees) in 2008.

Ligo, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2008, earned an undergraduate degree from Westminster College and MBA from Bowling Green State University. He is a certified public accountant in Pennsylvania.
