At Westminster, Mathews has served as a residence assistant and as a teacher's assistant in biology labs.

Dr. Shahroukh Mistry, Westminster assistant professor of biology and Mathews' adviser, said, "Melanie has been an outstanding student at Westminster and richly deserves this honor. It has been a pleasure to be her adviser and to work with her as a student and as a teaching assistant. We thank Helen Ferguson and the Bartramian Audubon Society for their generous support of Westminster students."
