Jazz Ensemble to "Strike up the Band"

Posted on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

The Westminster College Jazz Ensemble will "Strike up the Band" Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Berlin Lounge of the McKelvey Campus Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

The ensemble, under the direction of Andrew Erb, Westminster adjunct music faculty member, will present a diverse concert of challenging jazz music. The program includes "Decoupage," written by Hank Levy for the Stan Kenton Band; "Satin Doll," the Ellington classic; and the Sammy Nestico arrangement of "Strike up the Band" for the Count Basie Orchestra. Newer jazz compositions "Quasi-Modal" by Jeff Jarvis and "Max," recorded by the Clayton Hamilton Band, will be performed.

Featured with the ensemble will be "Stretch," a jazz trio that includes J.P. Scanga, a junior music major from Sharpsville, and Jim Flowers, Westminster adjunct instructor in saxophone.

Contact Dr. R. Tad Greig, Westminster assistant professor of music and director of bands, at (724) 946-7279 or e-mail greigrt@westminster.edu for additional information.
