Professor to Address Contemporary Nicaraguan Politics

Posted on Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Dr. Kristin Park, Westminster College associate professor of sociology, will discuss "Sandino Battles Neoliberalism: Nicaraguan CIEE Seminar" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

"I'll blend a discussion of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) seminar with the story of contemporary Nicaraguan politics," Park said. "The focus will be on the Sandinista revolution and government during the 1980s and examining its achievements and problems, especially in light of its portrayal then and now by the Reagan administration and the U.S. media.

"I'll also briefly look at Nicaraguan political and economic issues since that time. Nicaragua both illuminates larger themes of Latin America and is rather distinctive with the socialist project that it enacted."

Park has been with Westminster since 1993. She earned an undergraduate degree from Colgate University and a master's, a master's certificate in Latin American Studies, and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Faculty Forum, established in 1990, serves as a venue for the exchange of ideas and information among Westminster College faculty. Speakers present their research, teaching ideas, lectures, performances, special programs, and uses of technology to keep faculty informed about the work of colleagues from many disciplines.
