Science Majors Assist in Workshop for Girls

Posted on Monday, October 22, 2007

Dr. Helen Boylan, Westminster College associate professor of chemistry, was a workshop leader for the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference Oct. 13 at Robert Morris University.

The conference is for girls in sixth through ninth grades who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Boylan led the workshop "The Science of CSI" concerning the science of fingerprinting. Westminster students assisting Boylan were Nichole Batey, a sophomore biology major and a daughter of Debra and Hollis Batey of McDonald; and Kimberly Worst, a sophomore chemistry major and a daughter of Paul and Maria Worst of Butler.

Batey demonstrated taking and analyzing inked prints. Worst demonstrated dusting and lifting fingerprints. Workshop participants had an opportunity to experience both activities.

EYH is a national program to promote an interest in STEM disciplines for young women.

Boylan, who has been with Westminster since 2001, earned an undergraduate degree from Westminster College and Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
