Music Education Professor to Present Lecture at State Conference

Posted on Friday, April 13, 2007

Dr. R. Tad Greig, Westminster College music education assistant professor and director of instrumental activities, will present a lecture at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association State Conference Friday, April 20, in Hershey.

Greig's session, titled "Band Music Selection: What and Why," discusses research and results from his doctoral dissertation and offers suggestions on what to consider when selecting music that both enlightens and educates.

"As educators and ensemble leaders, we must remember that the rehearsal hall is also the rehearsal classroom," Greig said. "This is our time to expose our students to wonderful music for their artistic enlightenment, but it is also the time that we must train our students to understand the language of music. In a time when we must constantly defend the necessity of the arts in the core curriculum, we must be advocates for the intellectual, technical, and thought-provoking aspects that are developed in addition to the aesthetic, artistic, and creative benefits fostered through these arts."

This presentation marks Greig's third lecture in the past five years at the Pennsylvania State Music Convention and culminates an active semester for Greig, who has made several guest conducting appearances and has filled many PMEA adjudication judging duties.

The Westminster College bands will present a final series of concerts in May. The Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band will perform Friday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of adjunct professor of music Andrew Erb, will perform Saturday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Berlin Lounge of the McKelvey Campus Center. The Westminster College Orchestra will perform Sunday, May 6, at 3 p.m. in Orr Auditorium under the baton of Jonathan Moser.
